'Two alumni donated Rs 18 crore for IIT's School of Medical Research and Technology'

Alumni are constantly coming forward to provide financial help to Medical Research and Technology (SMRT) to be built at IIT Kanpur. In this sequence, two alumni Dr. Dev Zoneja and Hemant Jalan have donated 2.5 million US dollars and 18 crores respectively. The School of Medical Research and Technology (SMRT) aims to revolutionize medical education in India by bridging the gap between medical and technology disciplines. It is being constructed in the IIT Kanpur campus itself. For this an agreement was signed between both the IITs and the alumni.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is setting up a School of Medical Research and Technology (SMRT) at Kanpur. In this, the alumni are supporting IIT as their family. In this series MoU has been signed with two distinguished alumni Dr. Dev Zoneja and Hemant Jalan. Dr. Dev Zoneja and his wife Terry Musone donated an amount of US$2.5 million as a "Terry Musone and Dev Zoneja Gift", while Hemant Jalan donated 180 million Indians to support infrastructure development for the school. Donated Rs. Both distinguished alumni will now join the advisory board of SMRT as founding donors.



Director of IIT Prof. Abhay Karandikar said that “We are very proud of our alumni and their work, they are our pillars of strength and glory. I thank Dr. Dev Joneja, Hemant Jalan and their families in this direction to revolutionize medical education in India. I would like to thank you for being a part of the great journey and for his generous and selfless contribution to SMRT.

The Director informed that the School of Medical Research and Technology (SMRT) is a unique initiative of IIT Kanpur, which aims to revolutionize medical education in India by bridging the gap between medical and technology disciplines. The first phase of the project will include setting up of a Center of Excellence (CoE) towards state-of-the-art medical research and innovation with a 500-bed super-specialty hospital.

Hemant Jalan said, “Most IIT Kanpur alumni attribute their success in life to the years spent at IIT Kanpur and the same applies to me. I always wanted to contribute (gurudakshina) to the institute in a meaningful way And the concept of SMRT attracted me a lot.I am hopeful that the School of Medical Research and Technology initiative will elevate the stature of IIT Kanpur within the scientific community and I am very happy to be associated with this project as a founder.



Old students believe in IIT as family



Professor Jayant Singh, Dean of Resources and Alumni, IIT Kanpur, said that even today the ancient students consider themselves to be associated with IIT like a family. Due to the education here, even after reaching the high flight of his future, Guru is giving dakshina openly for the betterment of the students and to develop the youth of the poor section of the society.
