'The government also imposed a ban on the export of sugar after wheat.'

The government has taken another big decision to curb rising inflation amid the Russia-Ukraine war. After banning the export of wheat, the government has now decided to limit the export of sugar to 100 lakh tonnes. This restriction will be applicable from June 1, 2022 till further orders.

The government said in a late night order that sugar mills and exporters will have to get approval in the form of export release order for exports after June 1. In fact, the way the prices of sugar were increasing in the country, it was being speculated that the government could ban its export.

The government has taken this decision to ensure the availability of sugar in the country after wheat and to control its rising price. In a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), it has been said- 'Export of sugar (raw sugar, refined sugar and white sugar) has been kept in the limited category with effect from June 1, 2022.'

The government has imposed a ban on the export of sugar for the first time in six years. In fact, in view of the domestic demand, the government wants to keep additional sugar stock for two to three months. According to the data, sugar mills have signed contracts for export of 9 million tonnes of sugar in the current sugar marketing season. Out of this, 82 lakh tonnes of sugar has been sent by sugar mills for export, while about 78 lakh tonnes of sugar has been exported.

It is noteworthy that India is the second largest producer and exporter of sugar in the world after Brazil. Indonesia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and African countries buy the largest amount of sugar from India. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka are the largest sugar producing states. These three states produce 80 per cent of the country's total sugar.
