Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tributes to the legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary and said that in recent years, Indian players have brought laurels to the country across the globe.



The Prime Minister also extended his greetings on the National Sports Day being observed every year today on the birth anniversary of the great hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.



PM Modi tweeted, "Happy National Sports Day and tributes to Major Dhyan Chand ji on his birth anniversary. Recent years have been very good for sports. May this trend continue. May the game continue to gain popularity across India."



National Sports Day is being celebrated across the country today. On this day, people are encouraged to take some time out of their day to play their favorite sport and inculcate the habit of playing sports in daily life to keep themselves physically and mentally fit.



It is celebrated as a tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, who is called the magician of hockey. He is known for his goal scoring ability and excellent ball control.



Major Dhyan Chand was part of the three-time Olympic gold medal winning Indian hockey team. The Indian team won gold medals in the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympics. He scored 570 goals for India in 185 matches.
