The charges are under Sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Dr. Ali, who sustained head injuries requiring stitches, claimed he was attacked without provocation during a vehicle check while returning from a pre-wedding ceremony with relatives, some of whom serve in the Army and ITBP. A video showing him bleeding went viral, prompting outrage, including from former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who condemned the incident as damaging to the Army’s reputation. The Army ordered a probe, stating the vehicle was stopped due to intelligence about possible terrorist movement, and alleged that Ali attempted to snatch a soldier’s weapon, leading to a scuffle—a claim disputed by Ali and his relatives. The investigation is ongoing, with the Army promising strict action if misconduct is found.
