Tokyo Paralympic champion Avani Lekhara on Thursday won the 'Best Female Debuting Shooter' award at the 2021 Paralympic Games Awards announced by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).



At the same time, Czech Republic's bocce player Adam Peska won the men's title.



Lekhara is India's first female Paralympic gold medalist. The 19-year-old Lekra equaled the world record in the women's 10m SH1 air rifle standings final, breaking the Paralympic record in Tokyo. In addition, she won a bronze medal in the women's 50m SH1 air rifle standings event and became the first Indian woman to win two medals at the Paralympics. It was also India's first Paralympic medal in shooting.



After winning the 'Best Female Debut Shooter' award, Avni said, "It is an honor for me to win this award. My focus is always to give my best, bring medals for my country and do something with hard work, dedication and passion. Also possible, was on show."



She said, "I went there and I thought 'take one shot at a time', and that's what I did. Just keeping my focus on the process, I managed to win a gold medal for my country."
